Planting & garden beds

Give tired beds a fresh start with practical planting.

Garden planting and new garden beds.

Whether you are establishing a new garden or replacing plants that have not worked out, GARDR can help with site preparation, selecting suitable planting options for discussion, putting plants in and finishing beds with an appropriate mulch layer.

Whether you're after a planting service for a bare corner, plant installation for screening plants or new garden beds in a new estate, the work starts with garden bed preparation: improving the soil first, then garden planting and mulch to finish.

Garden bed planting to suit the site.

The final plant choice will take sun, soil, water and mature size into account. We can work to your preferred look and budget while being clear about ongoing watering and establishment.

What we can include

Planting labour, small-bed preparation, soil improvement as quoted, mulch installation, plant replacement and border tidy.

What is outside this service

Landscape architecture certification, guaranteed plant survival, irrigation design requiring other trades.

When to plant.

Autumn is often the best time to plant in Melbourne's outer north. The soil is still warm, rain is more reliable and new plants have months to grow roots before summer. Spring planting works too, but plants need closer watering through their first summer. Frost-tender plants are better planted once the risk of frost has passed, especially around Wallan, where winter frosts are common.

Working with clay.

Heavy clay holds nutrients well but drains slowly. Loosening compacted soil and working in organic matter such as compost improves its structure, and gypsum can help some clays. Mounding beds slightly helps plants that dislike wet feet. Plants suited to clay and to dry, windy summers, including many Australian natives such as correa, westringia, dianella and lomandra, mean less work later.

Watering in.

New plants need deep, regular watering through their first summer, even the drought-tolerant ones. Check your water corporation's current water-use rules before setting up a watering routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can you source plants?

Plants may be sourced as an itemised cost if agreed in the quote.

Can you create a garden from scratch?

GARDR can quote smaller planting and bed projects; major landscape builds require separate review.

Will the plants survive?

Living plants depend on weather, watering and conditions; we provide practical advice but cannot guarantee every plant.
