Hedge trimming & shrub pruning
Get hedges back into shape without turning it into a major project.
Hedge trimming, shaping and pruning.
Whether the hedge needs its regular tidy or a careful reshape, GARDR can quote practical, accessible hedge trimming and smaller shrub pruning. We look at the species, size, access and what you want the finished shape to be before starting.
Hedge trimming, hedge cutting, hedge pruning and hedge shaping all describe the same job here: bringing hedges, screening plants and shrubs back to a neat, even profile. Our hedge trimming service covers common local hedges such as lilly pilly, photinia and murraya, plus shrub and bush trimming around the rest of the garden.
Hedge cutting for overgrown or regular hedges.
Routine trimming and sensible reductions can help keep a garden neat, but not every hedge responds well to being cut back hard. We will assess what is appropriate.
What we can include
Accessible hedge and shrub shaping, sides/top trimmed to agreed profile, small pruning work, cuttings tidy as scoped.
What is outside this service
Tree climbing, work near electrical wires, dangerous height work, major tree removal.
When to trim.
Most hedges are best trimmed while they're actively growing, which in Melbourne's outer north usually means spring and again in late summer or early autumn. Flowering shrubs are generally trimmed just after they finish flowering, so next season's buds aren't cut off. Hard cuts are best avoided in the heat of mid-summer, when fresh cuts can scorch, and in mid-winter when growth has stopped.
Different hedges, different limits.
Lilly pilly, photinia, murraya, westringia and viburnum are common hedge plants in local gardens, and each responds differently to cutting. Many regrow well from a moderate trim, but cutting deep into old, leafless wood can leave gaps that take a long time to fill. Conifers in particular rarely regrow from bare wood.
Before work starts.
Birds often nest in dense hedges in spring, so it's worth checking before cutting. For a boundary hedge, sort out access to the neighbour's side beforehand. Work close to power lines needs specially qualified workers, so it isn't part of this service.
