Clay soils and mulch.
Much of the outer north sits on basalt plains with heavy clay soils that stay wet in winter and set hard and crack in summer. A layer of organic mulch about 5 to 7.5 cm deep, kept clear of plant stems, holds moisture, keeps the soil cooler and slows weeds down. Mulch breaks down over time, so most beds need a top-up every year or so.

Hand weeding works best when the soil is moist and the weeds are young, before they set seed. Weeds that spread by runners or bulbs, such as couch grass in garden beds or oxalis, usually take several visits to bring under control.
